Festivities of Saint Juan

They are celebrated on June 24.

We can include it within all those Mediterranean festivals related to the summer solstice and fire.

Later, on the pagan celebration the religious invocation of Saint Juan was accommodated. This is the oldest pattern in Ejea, as it can be seen just after the Christian reconquest.

The popular festivals, the heifers, the brass bands, the medieval re-enactments and of course, the bonfires are acts that invite us to share the joy.

Festivities of the Virgin of the Olive

The dedication to the Virgin of la Oliva is very old: at least since 1245 the hermitage of her name had land endowment in our town.

During the days that these Major Festivities last, in addition to the religious celebrations, there is a great variety of events: running of the bulls and bullfighting fair, sports activities, popular festivals, games for children, musical concerts and entertainment for the Third Age.

All this is surrounded by an exceptional atmosphere and the traditional hospitality of the Ejeans.

Feast of «The Vow»

It is a devout religious commemoration with a high civic component that Ejeans repeat every January 14.

The last third of the 18th century starts from an event. Between 1770 and 1773 Ejea suffered an epidemic outbreak that caused a worrying increase in mortality, especially among children, spreading fear among the population.

In view of this situation and in the face of the ineffectiveness of the sanitary means of the time, the General Council of the Villa asks the Ecclesiastical Chapter to take out in procession the image of the Immaculate Conception.

On January 14, 1773, this prayer procession took place, followed by the remission of the epidemic and its practical end.

It is then that the Ejeans, in gratitude to the Virgin, instituted the Vow to the Immaculate, which is still commemorated today every January 14.
