The Ejea Choral Contest, declared Activity of Tourist Interest in Aragon.
The Ejea de los Caballeros Choral Contest, which is held every year in the capital of the Cinco Villas within the framework of the Water Festivities, has been declared an Activity of Tourist Interest in Aragon and has thus been published this week in the Official Gazette of Aragon (BOA). The next edition of the contest, number 49, will take place on April 23 and 24, 2022.
“For being original and differentiated and for its cultural and educational value”, the Ejea Choral Singing Contest is a “reference and meeting place for choral and polyphonic music”, with the participation of “choirs from all over the national territory, thereby contributing significantly to the dissemination of the tourist image of Aragon”. Thus, it is proven that the Ejea Choral Contest meets the requirements to be declared of tourist interest in Aragon, as stated in the BOA.
In addition, the document highlights the “uniqueness” of the event at the national level, as well as the great capacity to attract visitors to Ejea, thus contributing to the seasonal adjustment of tourist activity and increasing the economic impact in the area.
“We are very proud of this distinction, which is one more addition to the Ejea Choral Contest, which has managed to become a national benchmark, receiving each edition more than a dozen choral groups from all over Spain”, declares the mayor from Ejea de los Caballeros, Teresa Ladrero.
The Ejea de los Caballeros City Council, together with the Ejea Development Agency SOFEJEA and the collaboration of the Ejea Polyphonic Choir, organize this choral event that was born in 1970 by the Ejea Center for Tourist Initiatives. Since 1995, the Department of Culture of the Ejea City Council assumed the organization of the contest, giving it a more professional turn with its first technical director, David Tellechea, who would be succeeded by Enrique Azurza, current artistic director.
Due to the health crisis of COVID-19, the Ejea Choral Contest could not be held in 2020 and 2021. But next year the Ejea Choral Contest resumes its activity and will be held on April 23 and 24, arriving at its edition number 49. As of October 2021, the communication campaign will be launched among the choral world of Spain, so that the choirs can consider their participation in 2022, in the categories of adult choir and youth choir.
